They’re Called Love Bugs, Although They’re Far From Loveable

love-bugs.jpg

Love bugs.  They don’t exactly ellicit a response of love now, do they?  On a trip to Florida last October, we were inundated with these harmless yet bothersome creatures.  They are harmless, but not if your wife is bug phobic and can’t enjoy the outdoors because there are love bugs EVERYWHERE.

See how they are apparently attached at the butts?  They fly around in pairs, hence the name love bugs.  We learned on our trip that they come out in Flordia with wild abandon for three weeks or so in October.  We were told that things were worse the week before, but that didn’t keep the love bugs from flying all around us.

We also learned that love bugs are oddly attracted to the color yellow.  Guess what color golf kart her parents have down in the retirement community?  Bright yellow and those love bugs us swarmed us like we were a giant pile of doggie doo and they were flies.

My wife will never go back to Florida in the fall, unless she is assured that love bug season is over.  I picked on her until I saw the cold sweat forming on her forehead and I had to drive us home in the golf cart while she swatted at herself the whole time.  The love bugs even effected our Disney World trip, but only a little.  I think love bugs are allergic to giant mice or something.

We have those things here in Oregon. We call them SEX bugs. They come out in the late spring to mate, and boy is that all they ever seem to do.
