An Eighties Mistake

80’s Hairstyles: The High Hair and the Mullet

I was in high school in the eighties, the decade of aqua net hair spray, legwarmers, blue eye shadow and mullets.  The cloud of hairspray in the locker room after gym class is a testament to the amount of aqua net it took just to keep the hair standing at attention.  I wasn’t quite the high hair girl that many of the more popular girls were…I didn’t have the hair and I didn’t bother to spend the time on my locks that the cheerleaders did.

I’m happy now that I didn’t succumb to the high hair trend.  Now there aren’t these ridiculously embarrasing pictures of me floating around the internet.  (at least not of me with hair touching the sky.)  From high school girls to popular rock bands, the amount of hair spray used in the eighties is likely responsible for the hole in the ozone layer.  Here are some pictures of eighties hair, style and a married couple who I thought were butch dykes before I looked closely.

80smullets.jpgThe His and Hers Mullets.  Th is is the couple that I thought were a couple of butch dykes before I really got a good look at the two of them.  I’m still not totally sure, but I think the person in the black shirt is a woman and the one in a red shirt is a man.  Any guesses?

The lipstick is the only thing that makes me believe that she is a she in the black shirt.  Her hands are huge, masculine looking.  You know, maybe it’s two men?  Two eighties bears?

Regardless, this is NOT a wedding photo that I would want to share with my children.

80s-hair.jpgLike mother, like father.  I don’t remember little kids running around with quite the high hair you see here, and I hope it was only for the picture.  This couple fought over their can of aqua net on a daily basis.  Check out the raised collars.  If mom and dad get too close, they might get their hair all tangled up together.

highhair6.jpgHigh hair wasn’t only for people with long hair.  Short hair was also popular in the eighties among women, with sideburn like hair on the sides, and feathering, short hair was also worn spiked as high as it would go.  Check out the puffy sleeves on her shirt and the boatneck collar.  Eighties fashion that I hope stays in the archives of fashion everywhere.  Boatneck collars and puffy sleeves, ewwww.

combinationhighhairmullet.jpgThis is not the model’s natural hair, she is actually an eighties wig model, but this pictures shows a great combination between the high hair and the mullet.  People actually paid money to have hair like this, lots of it.
